Curtis Boysen

Percussion, Drum Set

Curtis has been teaching since his senior year in high school. He loves sharing his passion for drums and music with his students. He has had experience with students of all ages and all levels. During lessons, Curtis likes to emphasize the importance of fundamentals such as rudiments, subdivisions, and tempo. As students begin to grasp the basic concepts of music and drumming, he begins introducing more complex concepts such as groupings, phrasing, and polyrhythms. The students then apply what they have learned into a musical context, such as a favorite song of theirs.
Curtis has experience playing many styles and genres of music. He has studied Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, Funk, Afrobeat and Rock to name a small few.
The most important thing to Curtis is that each student is an individual and each lesson should be tailored towards that individual student’s needs, desires, and goals.
Curtis graduated in 2015 from Northwestern’s Bienen School of Music with a Bachelor of Music. There he studied Jazz Performance under the program’s Director Victor Goines, Band Instructor and Class Professor Christopher Madsen, and Drum Instructor Willie Jones III. He has played with Christopher Madsen, Rufus Reid, Louis Cole, The Syndicate, Calid B, Freddie Old Soul, Red, and North by North to name a few. Curtis has studied with Willie Jones III, Justin Brown, Gregory Hutchinson, Mark Colenburg, Aaron Smith, Marlene Rosenberg, Christopher Madsen, and more.
