Kitt Lyles is an upright and electric bassist, composer, and music educator from Greenville, South Carolina. Since completing a BM in jazz studies from Northwestern University in 2013, where he studied with Jazz Lincoln Center Orchestra members Victor Goines and Carlos Henriquez, Kitt has quickly distinguished himself both as a performer and teacher in the Chicago area. He has been featured on 12 studio albums, including composing and producing his debut album “Real Talk,” which peaked at #84 in Jazzweek radio charts. He has toured and taught masterclasses across the US, Latin America, and Asia, playing at venues such as Zinco Jazz Club in Mexico City, Blue Note Jazz Club in Beijing, China, and Shapeshifter Lab in NYC. As a staple bass player in Chicago’s jazz, latin, and world/folk music scenes he has performed at The Green Mill, The Jazz Showcase, The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Chicago Latin Jazz Festival, and The Old Town School of Folk Music. In addition to leading his original jazz group “Real Talk Collective,” he is a member of Roy McGrath’s quartet, Gustavo Cortinas “Snapshot,” Son Monarcas, Yuri Hevia’s Chicago South America Ensemble, Yuyo Verde tango band, Abud: a Band, and has performed alongside many acclaimed local and touring artists including Amos Hoffman, Tony Do Rosario, Mike Allemana, Victor Goines, Damian Rivero, Vladimir Cetkar, Victor Garcia, Chris Madsen, Alyssa Allgood, and Justin Copeland.
Kitt’s teaching method is deeply informed by his extensive performing experience. He draws on these experiences to coach his bass students on the foundational role of the bass throughout many different genres of music. Students of all ages and levels are welcome and no matter what you bring into the lesson room, you will leave with crucial fundamental and technical skills, a deeper understanding of the stuff the makes music work, and new sources of musical inspiration to fuel a life-long practice of creativity and self-expression.
