Stacy McMichael

Double Bass, Electric Bass and Cello

Stacy McMichael is a dynamic Upright and Electric bassist, cellist, and educator with a rich background in classical, jazz, and commercial music. Her musical journey began at age 8 when a few notes from the JAWS theme inspired her to pick up the bass—despite being encouraged to choose a “more gender-appropriate” instrument. She followed her passion, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Double Bass Performance from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and a Master’s degree in Jazz Bass Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Miami (Florida).

As a professional performer, Stacy has appeared on national tours and Broadway productions including 1776, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Cabaret ZaZou, Teatro ZinZanni, Taste of Things to Come, and the international hit SIX: The Musical. In 2023, she performed on cello with DJ Kygo at Lollapalooza Paris before 70,000 fans.

Stacy’s diverse musical achievements include a #1 debut on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Chart (with saxophonist Frank Catalano and Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin), recording for the upcoming musical film All Wigged Out (produced by two-time GRAMMY winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer), and multiple TV/podcast features. Her work has been highlighted in Strings Magazine, and she’s led the gypsy jazz band Le Percolateur for over 15 years, featured in an hour-long PBS concert.

Beyond the stage, Stacy is passionate about education. She currently teaches as an adjunct professor at Joliet Junior College, Olivet Nazarene University, City Colleges of Chicago, and Saint Xavier University. A committed mentor, she also serves as a Governor for the Recording Academy’s Chicago Chapter, having entered the organization through its GRAMMYU program.

With over two decades of experience, Stacy brings creativity, versatility, and deep industry knowledge to every lesson. Whether students are exploring classical repertoire, jazz improvisation, or pop/rock performance, Stacy’s inclusive, empowering approach helps them develop confidence, artistry, and lifelong musical skills.
